What will I be asked when I call?

When you call Thames Valley Police, you will normally be asked to tell us:

  • Your name and address.
  • The telephone number that you are calling from.
  • A main contact number (mobile or home number) where we can contact you.
  • The exact location of the incident that you are reporting.
  • What the incident is.
  • A description of the people involved, including height, build, and clothing. Information such as possible age, hair colour and style, accents, and any distinguishing features like warts, scars, tattoos or blemishes is also very useful.
  • Whether you are a witness to the incident or are reporting it on behalf of someone else.
  • Your ethnicity. We explain why we ask you for it.

If you are still watching the incident, you may be asked to stay on the line.

If you are reporting a road collision, you may be asked to tell us:

  • How many vehicles are involved.
  • The type of vehicles involved.
  • The number of injured and how serious the injuries are.
  • Whether the road is blocked.
  • Whether there is debris in the roadway.
  • Whether you were involved or if you are a witness.
  • You may be told to report the collision to your local police station.
